About the work

Curationist LogoCurationist Object Description
The Amazons are a mythic group of martial women. They formed a matriarchal foil to highly patriarchal Athenian society, where even privileged women were kept illiterate and forbidden from engaging in politics or war. This terracotta plate from 500 BCE depicts an Amazon in full armor with sword and shield, carrying her fallen comrade. She strains under her fellow soldier’s weight.
