About the work
Curationist Object Description
In View of Amalfi from the Capuchin Monastery, the viewer looks out from behind the monastery's open gates at the coastal town of Amalfi, Italy. Built in the early 1200s, the monastery housed religious communities. In 1583 Capuchin friars were charged with the site until their expulsion in 1813. The structure has historically drawn domestic and foreign visitors, integrating the monastery into early images of the town. Like many regional artists during this period, this artist depicts Amalfi from the monastery's grotto.
