About the work
Curationist Object Description
To accommodate the quickly growing population of 19th century New York City, single-family homes were divided into multi-family homes known as tenements. Tenements were mostly occupied by immigrants, particularly the Irish that fled Ireland because of the Jewish immigrants escaping Nazi Germany. Although lacked indoor plumbing.
This etching by Charles Henry White captures the dingy conditions of a typical New York City tenement.
