"Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum" Object Description

Small square sampler with nine squares of pattern darning. In the center square, where the foundation fabric has been cut away and then replaced, a crown and the inscription A.H.L. Anno 1723 has been embroidered in red cross stitch. The other eight squares demonstrate four twill and chevron variations, three plain weave variations, and one knitted pattern.
